Your Zyxel webinar questions, answered

Thanks to everyone who joined us and shared questions. We’ve gathered the answers below to help you explore Zyxel’s outdoor wireless options and plan your next deployment. We’ll update this section as additional details become available.

Is a local controller required for Zyxel access points?

No. The standard access points covered in the webinar can be managed directly through a web interface or through Nebula cloud management. Compatible W-series APs can also use the wireless LAN controller built into Zyxel’s USG Flex security appliances.

For the FWA7 system, day-to-day management runs through Nebula. Leaf Plus also includes a local installer interface for setup and alignment.

Will the PtMP access points and stations support TR-369 USP? What about TR-069 management?

At the time of the webinar, Zyxel had no plans to add TR management to its PtMP access points and client devices. These products use Nebula’s web interface or API for management.

Zyxel does offer a separate family of TR-manageable CPE routers, including fiber-WAN, copper-WAN, and a 5G device. Support varies by product, so those capabilities shouldn’t be assumed to apply to the Root and Leaf PtMP system.

What does the lifetime warranty cover? Is advanced replacement available?

Zyxel described its business-class access point warranty as a hardware warranty covering manufacturing defects and engineering flaws. Coverage extends to five years after Zyxel stops selling the product. SOHO access points were described as having a two-year warranty.

Advanced replacement is also available. Contact our team for help confirming the applicable replacement process and return requirements.

What is the price of the 2×2 AP? How much is the 2×2 Root FWA PtMP AP?

For the specifically named 2×2 Root FWA PtMP AP, our team quoted $220 each during the webinar.

$ 219.99

For other 2×2 AP models, contact your Streakwave representative for a quote. We can help you confirm the model, current pricing, and any applicable partner discounts.

Does Root Plus support beamforming or beam steering? What is the minimum beam azimuth angle?

Zyxel described Root Plus as combining Wi-Fi 7 beamforming with its smart antenna technology. The smart antenna array adjusts its pattern based on client locations and surrounding interference.

The webinar didn’t establish a minimum beamforming azimuth angle or a separate beam-steering specification. Those details are included in the follow-up items below.

$ 1,199.99

How many Leaf radios can connect to a single Root Plus?

The practical number depends on the service you want to deliver to each customer and the airtime and throughput available across the sector. Zyxel explained that airtime would typically become the limiting factor before the firmware’s client limit.

An exact supported maximum wasn’t confirmed during the webinar. We’ll add that figure once it’s available.

Are replacement antennas available for purchase?

Yes. Zyxel offers antenna options, and the webinar also covered using third-party antennas with products that have external antenna connections.

The Leaf Plus discussed in the webinar used SMA connectors. Other outdoor models used RP-SMA or N-type connectors, depending on the product. Our team can help you identify antenna options for the specific model you’re using.

Are labs or product trials available?

Streakwave can help arrange try-and-buy trials. Zyxel described a trial that allows customers to evaluate the equipment and then return it or purchase it.

The presenter indicated that the trial was approximately 45 days, subject to confirmation. Contact our team for the available options and current terms. A separate lab program wasn’t outlined during the webinar.

Are the Root, Leaf, and antennas available? What if the quantity I need isn’t showing in stock?

During the webinar, our team reported stocking the Root, Leaf, and antenna in our Ohio and Utah locations. We also quoted a 5–7 day lead time for additional quantities of those products that weren’t shown as in stock.

Inventory and lead times can change. If the website doesn’t show the quantity you need, contact your Streakwave representative so we can check availability for your order.

Can two Root Plus units create a long-range, high-speed point-to-point link? The application requires −40 to +70 and IP67.

At the time of the webinar, Root Plus-to-Root Plus point-to-point operation wasn’t supported. Zyxel welcomed feedback on that use case for its product development team.

Root Plus was described as IP68-rated, but the requested temperature range wasn’t confirmed. We’ll add further environmental details when available.

What is the status of the firmware for the FWA products?

Zyxel said official release firmware had been available since June 2026. The FWA products were described as released products, rather than a beta launch.

Does Zyxel offer models that support OpenWiFi?

Yes. Zyxel said some Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 models support OpenWiFi and OpenWrt firmware. The process described involved registering device serial numbers to obtain a bootloader-unlock key.

Specific compatible models weren’t listed in the answer, and integrations with third-party OpenWiFi management platforms weren’t yet in place at the time of the webinar.

What real-world throughput has Zyxel seen at 5 km?

The presenter recalled a test that achieved more than 1 Gbps at 5 miles, rather than 5 km, in at least one configuration. The antenna used in that test wasn’t identified, and a confirmed result for the requested 5 km distance wasn’t provided.

Zyxel emphasized that results vary with RF conditions and interference, so the recalled test shouldn’t be treated as a performance guarantee for a particular deployment.

Does the 70° figure describe the point-to-point solution’s horizontal coverage?

Yes. Zyxel confirmed a 70° horizontal spread for the separate point-to-point solution. That figure wasn’t given as the Root Plus minimum beamforming angle.

Questions we’re following up on

A few questions need additional detail from Zyxel or a closer look at the products requested. We’ll update this section as answers become available.

How high does the PtMP device need to be mounted to serve the surrounding area?

Mounting-height guidance wasn’t provided during the webinar. We’ll add Zyxel’s response here once available.

Does the Root and Leaf PtMP system support RADIUS?

RADIUS support wasn’t addressed during the webinar. We’ll update this answer once Zyxel confirms the details.

Does the system support TDD with fixed duty cycles and GPS synchronization for frequency reuse?

This topic came up more than once. Zyxel confirmed that the system uses some TDD, but fixed duty cycles and GPS synchronization for frequency reuse still need clarification.

The discussion of GPS for AFC location reporting didn’t answer the separate question about synchronization for frequency reuse.

What about APs and firewalls that appear unavailable on the website?

During the webinar, we explained that we were still building inventory across the Zyxel lineup. Availability and delivery dates for the specific APs and firewalls mentioned weren’t established.

If you’re looking for a particular model, send the product details to your Streakwave representative so we can check availability and lead times.

Do the antennas use V/H polarization for 5 GHz and X45 for 6 GHz?

The polarization configuration wasn’t confirmed during the webinar. We’ll add the technical details once Zyxel provides them.

Which base station would suit a small WISP deployment under 10 km with nLOS conditions?

Zyxel presented Root Plus as an FWA7 base station and suggested approximately 5 km for a typical deployment with around 15–20 users. Longer links were described as depending on service requirements and client-side antennas.

The specific sub-10 km nLOS application needs further review before a model or expected performance can be confirmed.

Which additional specifications still need confirmation?

We’ll also update the answers above as more detail becomes available on:

  • Root Plus’s minimum beamforming azimuth angle and beam-steering specifications.
  • The exact maximum number of Leaf clients supported by one Root Plus.
  • Root Plus’s suitability for the requested −40 to +70 operating range.
  • Advanced replacement procedures and return deadlines.
  • Trial duration and full participation terms.
